ADOPTING LOCAL STYLE
When the owners of this residence relocated from California, they wanted to transform the primary bath and kitchen to reflect the local Santa Fe style. With their white-on-white color schemes, these spaces had an early 2000s aesthetic that lacked the warmth and vibrancy of the region. To bring in color, a New Mexican vibe, and modern accents, they enlisted Heceli De Leon of Heceli Kitchens and Baths. De Leon collaborated with Edy Keeler—whose firm, Edy Keeler Interiors, she had recently acquired—throughout the remodel.
Over the course of a year, contractor Luis Mingura of Innovative Building Solutions executed De Leon’s designs. In the primary bath, fleur-de-lis tile, rich dark cabinetry, and a palette of chocolate and cream created an Old World ambiance. Antique double doors added a sense of history and character to the space.
The kitchen remodel introduced functional updates, including the removal of a peninsula, which allowed De Leon to expand the kitchen’s width and depth. This newly enlarged space accommodated an island, providing ample workspace and improving the overall flow of the room. Southwest Countertops assisted in resolving logistical challenges related to the island’s countertop overhang, ensuring the homeowners had the legroom they desired for the seating area.
To cater to the homeowners’ love for wine and whiskey, De Leon designed custom storage to house their collection. However, an unexpected challenge arose when the cabinet doors ordered to conceal the wine fridge didn’t fit due to an unannounced dimension change by the manufacturer. The team quickly adapted, creating a seamless look that incorporated custom grapevine pulls for a unique touch.
De Leon infused the kitchen with color and local character by selecting olive green cabinets, Desert Canyon granite countertops with striking veins of green and gold, and a bold, earthy-toned backsplash. The result was a perfect blend of Southwest charm and contemporary functionality.
